The most active research and development programs for alternative energy sources, sources other than commercially proven conventional petroleum, natural gas, coal, hydropower and light water fission reactor, are directed are major sources:
- Advanced technology for recovering and processing fossil fuel.
- Advanced nuclear process and both fission and fusion.
- Advanced solar – based technology to convert photon energy to heat, electricity, chemical or biomass
- Improve technology for utilizing geothermal and geo-pressured resources.
The distinction between conventional and alternative energy source technology is arbitrary since both are part of a continuum of energy-related technologies in various states of technical and commercial development
